How to Overcome Your Fears
Stuttering when facing crowds, trembling when staying high, and even freaking out when seeing clowns, countless kinds of fears have occupied people’s mind for decades. If those conditions mentioned above are familiar to you, then you’ve come to the right place. Having fears might waste your energy, worsen your mental status, and even limit your potential. To step forward in your life path, to turn obstacles into motivating force, and to take back the mastership of your own mind, it’s necessary to conquer your fear. After reading the article, you will become the better self. There are three indispensable steps required for achieving your goal - identify it, know it, and conquer it.
The reason why we have fears is actually a biologically designed mechanism. Starting from the ancient times, our ancestors have defeated countless difficulties with the help of fears. Here’s how it works. By raising our blood pressure, pulse and our awareness of danger, we will go into the “Fight Mode” which boosts our reaction speed and enhances our strength to escape from hurts. Having fears enables us to protect ourselves from dangers theoretically. Despite having several advantages, these biological reactions do not help and could be even annoying when it comes to difficulties like giving a speech or talking to crowds. As a consequence, it’s still necessary to conquer our fears.
Take my experience of overcoming the fear of cockroaches for instance. To defeat your fears, the very first step is to identify it. Admitting that you have the fears is the crucial part, which seems meaningless but it’s actually the key to start overcoming them. Well goes the saying, “you only fight the enemy when you admit having an enemy.” Once you admit having the fears, you just get started.
Secondly, you need to know your fear. Instead of avoiding the triggering of fear and the fear itself, try to trigger it and feel it intentionally to truly know your fear. That is, we need to realize that which part of the things we have the fear. Take my fear of cockroaches for instance again. My fear of cockroaches is mainly on its’ body structure because it looks like the spine-chilling extinct marine creature “Trilobites” (See picture 1). As for the other common fears like Trypophobia or Socialphobia, they will be the fear of intensive patterns and interacting with others. Now we realize the exact part of fear we have, thus we can move on to the next step.
Finally, we are able to conquer our fear. The ultimate stage of overcoming fears is to face it directly. (See picture 2). The longer you avoid solving your problems, the more serious your problems will be. The method I used is called “exposure therapy” (See picture 3). According to the well-known American psychiatrist Dr. Frank Ochberg (2012), we can realize that several types of mental disorders like PTSD and Trypophobia can be cured gradually by exposing the target patient to the anxiety source directly. Since we already know what exactly we are afraid of, we are able to utilize the exposure therapy to overcome our fear. At the beginning for instance, I would feel disgusted by seeing cockroaches. But as time goes by, I now can stare at cockroaches without any fear and I even watch videos torturing cockroaches for fun.
To sum up, the fear that deeply stuck in our mind is not unbreakable. All you need to do is give yourself a chance. Identify it firstly (admit your fear), know it secondly (know your fear well), and conquer it finally. After knowing these instructions that I gave, you’ll be able overcome your own fear by following these vital steps mentioned previously. After all, nobody desires for fear. It will be a better world if we manage to overcome our own drawbacks.
